According to the joint Freightwaves & WIT 2019 survey, women make up over 10 percent of over-the-road (OTR) truck drivers in the US. This amounts to an increase of almost 30 percent over the 7.89 percent seen in WIT’s 2018 survey. The increase came after an industry-wide push to hire more women drivers in response to last year’s capacity crunch.
We sat with the president and CEO of WIT, Ellen Voie, to understand how this data was collected and what it means for the future of women behind the wheel.
The president and CEO of the Women In Trucking Association, Ellen Voie, joined us for our inaugural episode. Voie is an internationally recognized speaker and authority on gender diversity and inclusion for women working in non-traditional careers in transportation. The Women In Trucking Association was formed to promote the employment of women in the trucking industry, to remove obstacles that might keep them from succeeding, and to celebrate the successes of its members.
